brain plasticity Flashcards
does the brain ever become ‘fully developed’
No the brain is always adapting to changes in it’s environment.
What is myelination
Myelination is the process of a myelin sheath forming around a nerver.
when does myelination occure
Myelination occurs from when the child is a fetus until early adulthood.
What is synaptogenesis
Synaptogenesis is the formation of synapses between neurons.
when does synaptogenesis occure
Synaptogenesis occurs at about week 12 of pregnancy and ends at about 15 years.
what is synaptic purning
synaptic pruning is the process over removing synapses.
why does synaptic pruning occur
synaptic pruning occurs becuase it increases the overall efficiency of neural networks and helps to refine neural circuits.
what does the term ‘use it or lose it’ refer to in relation to brain development.
during synaptic pruning if a synapse isn’t used it gets removed.
What is brain plasticity
Brain plasticity is the ability for the brain to change in response to it’s environment, this often occurs to the synapses.
When does brain plasticity occur.
Your brain is changing all the time for example when someone teaches you a new method to solve an equation and new nueral path when is made. Your brain has the ability to change more when your young and as you get older and synapses pruning occurs it becomes harder for the to brain change.
How does the brain change.
The brain changes by making more nueral pathways it can also change when it removes path ways.
what is life long plasticity
Life long plasticity is plasticity that lasts a lifetime like learning a musical instrument.
is brain plasticity a thing for all animals.
yes for most animals it is a thing but it seems that as the volume of your brain increases the brain does as well.
Does an part of the brain have more plasticity then others.
yes the sensory and motor cortex have greater amounts of brain plasticity.
How much can the average person save in their working memory.
about 7 things.
