Brain Parts Flashcards
Where is the cerebral cortex located? What is it’s function?
Located in the outer layer of the cerebrum. It’s function is to conduct consciousness.
Where are the parietal lobes located? What is their function?
Lobe located in the upper back of the brain. Function is to process sensory information from the outside world.
What are the occipital lobes?
Lobe located in the lower back of the brain which is responsible for visual processing.
What are the temporal lobes?
Lobe located in the lower front of the brain which is involved in auditory perception and recognizes speech.
What are the frontal lobes?
Lobe located in the top front of the brain which is responsible for voluntary movement, expressive language, and higher level executive orders such as planning.
What is the thalamus?
Small structure in the middle of the brain that relays motor and sensory signals to the cerebral cortex.
What is the limbic system responsible for? What three parts of the brain are included in the limbic system?
Brain system responsible for processing emotion & memory. Includes hippocampus, amygdala, and hypothalamus.
What is the hippocampus responsible for?
Learning and memory
What is the amygdala responsible for?
Emotion
What is the hypothalamus responsible for?
Homeostasis; releasing hormones and regulating body temperature
What is the midbrain?
Middle of the brain containing reticular formation and ventral tegmental area
Where is the hindbrain? What three brain parts does it contain?
Lower back of the brain containing the medulla, pons, and cerebellum.
What is reticular formation responsible for?
Regulating sleep cycle, arousal, and alertness/motor activity.
What is the ventral tegmental area (& Substantia nigra) responsible for?
Dopamine production, and movement.
What is the medulla responsible for?
Controlling automatic processes
