brain parts Flashcards
forebrain
processing of information concerning cognitive activities, processing sensory information, emotions and voluntary motor activities
cerebral cortex
controls high order processing, seperated into four lobes by deep fissures
thalamus
filters and relays information from all senses except smell to appropriate part of the brain
hypothalamus
regulate hunger, thirst, sex drive and sleep cycle
hindbrain
coordinates sensory and motor messages entering and leaving spinal cord and responsible for balance and coordination
cerebellum
recieves information from sensory systems, spinal cord and other parts of the brain
medulla
receives signals from spinal cord and regulates vital functions
midbrain
processes information between hindbrain and forebrain it is responsible for collecting all senses (- smell) and sending to higher regions of brain, consists of reticular function
reticular function
extends from top of spinal cord to thalamus, controls flow of incoming sensory stimuli and redirects them to cerebral cortex
corpus callosum
thick band of fibres that connects cerebral hemispheres, allowing them to transmit messages from one hemisphere to another
