brain imaging Flashcards
what is an EEG
(electroencephalogram)
a test that detects abnormalities in your brainwaves. electrodes are placed onto your scalp to detect tiny electoral charges from your brain cells.
what is an EEG used for?
to diagnose neurological conditions eg, epilepsy, sleep disorder, brain injury assessment.
what does the output of an EEG look like?
static
what is a CT?
(computed tomography)
uses x-rays to create detailed cross section of the body by rotating an x-ray source and capturing multiple “slices” then uses a computer to put them together
what is a CT used for?
bone fractures or guiding medical procedures
what does the output of a CT scan look like?
static
what is a MRI
(magnetic resonance imaging)
uses a magnetic field and computer generated radio waves to create detailed images
what is an MRI used for?
diagnosing conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, muscles ECT
what does the output image of a MRI look like?
dynamic
live changes/ moving image
what is an FMRI
(functional magnetic resonance image)
it measures brain activity by detecting changes in the level of oxygen which shows what are active while doing a task
what does the output image of a FMRI look like?
dynamic
live changes/ moving image
what is a FMRI used for?
plan brain surgeries, assessing neurological condition by identifying affected brain areas.
