Brain & Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Nervous System
2 principal division:
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Consist of brain & spinal cord
Interpret incoming sensory information & issue instructions based on that information & passed experience
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Consist of the cranial & spinal nerves, ganglia, & sensory receptors
2 major subdivision:
- sensory portion:
- motor portion:
Sensory Portion
Consist of nerve fibers that conduct impulses from SENSORY RECEPTORS TOWARD CNS
Subdivision of the PNS
Motor Portion
Consist of nerve fibers that conduct IMPULSES AWAY FROM CNS
Subdivision of the PNS
Consist of 2 different System:
-Somatic division aka voluntary system
-Autonomic nervous system (ANS)
Somatic division (aka voluntary system)
Controls the skeletal muscles
Part of motor portion which is subdivision to PNS
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
Controls smooth & cardiac muscles & glands
Part of motor portion which is subdivision to PNS
Neural Tube
During embryonic development of all vertebrates the CNS 1st makes it’s appearance as a simple tubelike structure
Extends down the dorsal median plane
