brain bloodflow Flashcards
where is anterior circulation derived from
internal carotid artery via the aortic arch
where is posterior circulation derived from
basilar artery via the subclavian artery
anterior circulation
aorta-> left/right common carotid artery-> external/internal carotid artery-> (from internal) anterior and middle cerebral arteries
aorta
largest artery; feeds the right and left common carotid artery
anterior circulation
left/right common carotid artery
supplies the left/right side of the face and hemisphere of the brain
anterior circulation
external carotid artery
provides blood to the pharynx, tongue, face, and eyes (FEPT)
anterior circulation
external carotid artery
provides blood to the pharynx, tongue, face, and eyes (FEPT)
anterior circulation
internal carotid artery
main source of blood supply to the brain
anterior circulation
anterior cerebral artery
supplies blood to the medial portions of the frontal and parietal lobes, corpus callosum, and basal ganglia
anterior circulation
middle cerebral artery
important in speech, language, and hearing function
- MCA upper and lower branches provide blood supply to the lateral hemisphere surfaces
- affects broca’s area, primary auditory cortex, most of primary motor and somatosensory cortex, wernicke’s area, angular and supramarginal gyri, and arcuate fasciculus
- MCA includes branches that supply the frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes
* - infarct at junction between ICA and MCA interrupts bloodflow to all perisylvian speech and language areas
* deeper infarcts (further into cerebral hemispheres) may produce more localized deficits
anterior circulation
posterior circulation
aorta-> left/right subclavian artery-> left/right vertebral artery and basilar artery-> right and left branches of AICA, SCA, & PCA
left/right subclavian artery
supplies blood to left/right arm
posterior circulation
left/right vertebral artery
supply blood to the left/right part of the cerebellum and lateral part of the medulla
posterior circulation
basilar artery
posterior circulation for the cerebral hemisphere
posterior circulation
anterior inferior cerebellar artery
(AICA)
supplies blood to parts of the pons and cerebellum
posterior circulation
