Brain & Behaviour Flashcards
How do inhaled anesthetics work?
Produce immobility via the spinal cord. Enhance inhibitory channels and attenuate excitatory channels.
What is Minimum Aveolar Concentration?
Aveolar (or end-expiratory) concentration at which 50% of patients will not show a motor response to a standardized surgical incision.
95% of patients will not respond to 1.2 MAC. 99% to 1.3 MAC.
NOTE: MAC of different gases are ADDITIVE
Which is the only inhaled anesthetic to have analgesic effects?
Nitrous Oxide
What are the components of consciousness and their anatomical regions?
Wakefulness/alertness: Ascending Reticular Activation System (ARAS)
Awareness/reasoning: cerebral cortex
Disturbances in alertness: delirium
Disturbances in awareness: dementia
Disturbances in both: delirium or coma
