Brain Anatomy Notebook Lab Notes Flashcards
Arbor Vitae
Arbor Vitae
“tree of life”; arrangement of white matter in the cerebellum that resembles a tree
Cerebellum
Swelling posterior to cerebrum; center of balance and coordination of skeletal muscles
Circle of Willis
Mass of blood vessels around the pituitary gland on underside surface of brain; these blood vessels provide nutrition to the brain
(inferior)Colliculus
superior, and inferior-round swellings of the midbrain immediately anterior to cerebellum and superior to the pons
Corpus callosum
C shaped mass of white fibers that connect the two halves of the brain
Diencephalon
Name for the thalamus and hypothalamus together
Fornix
Base of the corpus callosum
Gray matter
Nervous tissue composed mainly of cell bodies of neurons
gyrus(i)
raised area on surface of brain
name the green portion
hypothalamus
inferior to the thalamus; has to do with homeostatsis-water balance, energy balance, appetite, thirst
meninges
coverings over the CNS; three layers; pia on surface, arachnoid in middle, and dura mater, the tough outer layer
name
Midbrain
called the mesencephalon; between the pons and diencephalon; some reflexes centerd here
Olfactory Bulbs
found on anterior, ventral slide of the cerebrum are the center for the sense of smell
optic nerve
nerve for each eyeball carrying impulses for the sense of sight
optic chiasma
site of crossing of many of the fibers from the optic nerves
