recieve stimuli and conduct impulses
describr epithelial tissue
Lining or a covering. covers all free body surfaces, covers and lines all organs has no blood supply, Avascular Anchored by a basement membrane classified by shape and number of cell layers functions are protection, absorbtion, diffusion, secretion and lubrication
what structure does epithelial cells do not cover
ends of bones
name and describe the 3 types of cell layers
simple- 1 layer striated- multiple layers pseudostriated- cells that appeared to be striated but are not
name the the different shapes of tissue
Squamas Cuboidal Columnar
describe squamas cells
flat, leaf-like cells(fried egg shaped) -one layer leaf like cells -found in lungs, lining blood vessels, eardrum Function: diffusion and filtration
describe cuboidal tissues
-cube shaped, has shape and depth(central nucleus) -one layer of cuboidal cells -found in ducts, tubules of the kidneys, opening on the inside of the tube called the lumen -also found on the surface of ovaries and ducts of some glands
describe Columnar tissues
-long tall column like cells(nucleus closer to basement membrane, usually in a stragiht line) -one layer of column like cells -white goblet cell(mucous producing cell) w/in columnar cells Function: Absorbtion Found in digestive system, portion of respiratory tract
describe pseudostratified epithelial
-cells appeared to be stratified bu actually aren’t,NOTE nuclei tha tare at diff. level -NOTE the brush border of cilia along the top of the cells -found mainly in respiratory tract, cilia used for devris out of lungs
describe Transitional Epithelium
-squamous cells that must stretch and shrink -appears stratified when relaxed -found specifically in the urinary bladder
describe connective tissue
-most abundant tissue in the body -a connective tissue consists of “cells in a Matrix” Functions: connects, supports, frames, fills spaces, stores fat, makes blood cells
matrix
composed of fibers and a ground substance. The ground substance can be fluid, gel-like, or solid. Fibers are elastic, collagen, or reticular Functions: Connect, supports, frames, fills spaces, stores fat, makes blood cells
