Brain Anatomy Flashcards
What are folds in the brain called?
Gyrus
What are dips in the brain called?
Sulcus
What is the brainstem made up of?
Midbrain
Pons
Medulla
What is the insula involved in?
Emotional changes
What is the retrosplenial cortex involved in?
Spatial awareness
What arteries supply the cortical areas of the brain?
Anterior, Middle and Posterior cerebral arteries
How is CSF produced?
Choroid plexus in lateral ventricles > inter-ventricular foramen > 3rd ventricle > cerebral aqueduct > 4th ventricle > subarachnoid space
How is CSF reabsorbed?
Through superior sagittal sinus + arachnoid villus
What are the functions of CSF?
- Allows brain to float
- Mechanical protection from injury
- Chemical stability
- Protects against ischaemia
What stain is used for CNS tissue?
Weigerts stain
Stains myelin sheath
White matter = myelinated axons = dark
Grey matter = neurone cell bodies = unstained
What are the functions of the hippocampus?
- Aggressive behaviour
- Endocrine control via hypothalamus
- Learning + memory
What are the functions of the amygdala?
- Control over autonomic effects-mediated by hippocampus
- Aggression + rage
What is the limbic system involved in?
Motivation, emotion, learning + memory
