What are some causes of brain abscess
extension of sepsis from middle ear/sinuses
trauma or surgery to the scalp
penetrating head injuries
embolic events from endocarditis
What do the presenting symptoms of a brain abscess depend on
upon site of abscess
– eg if in critical area it will present earlier
What may someone with a brain abscess present with
Headache - often dull, persistent
fever - may be absent
focal neurology – oculomotor/abducens nerve palsy secondary to raised intracranial pressure
nausea
papilloedema
seizures
What investigations are required
assessment of the patient including imaging with the CT scanner
What management is required
Surgery
-craniotomy and abscess cavity is debrided
IV Abx - CEPHALOSPORIN AND METRONIDAZOLE
Intracranial pressure management - dexamethasone
