BRAIN Flashcards
CNS Consists of:
Brain and Spinal cord
What is the brain covered in?
meningeal sheath - protective coating that layers around the brain
what are the 3 layers of the meningeal sheath?
PAD
Pia - thinner and weak layer
Arachnoid - middle
Dura - toughest layer
what are the 3 main areas of the brain?
The forebrain (cerebrum), midbrain, hindbrain
what are the 4 lobes in the cerebrum
Frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital
what is the cortex thickness
average 1.5mm
what does the inner surface of the cerebrum consist of?
myelinated nerve fibre axons - white matter
what is corpus callosum
bundle of nerve fibres
what is central sulcus?
divides the sensors and motor areas of the brain
where is the hypothalamus
behind the optic chiasma, projects downwards, ends at the stalk and connects to the pituitary gland.
pituitary gland lies below the optic chiasma
What is the shape of the Lateral Geniculate Bodies
Knee shaped
2 masses of nerve cells bodies
they lie between the optic tracts and optic radiations
what are the 4 colliculi in the mid brain
2 superior (upper) - contain visual reflex nuclei 2 inferior (lower) - contain auditory nuclei
function of the midbrain
controls eye movements
involved in auditory respsonses
what does cerebrospinal fluid do?
nutrients and protection to brain
function of The Pons
associated with voluntary and involuntary eye movements
