Brain 5: Cerebrum Flashcards
Cerebral cortex is the region of…
the region of grey matter that forms the outer rim about 2-4 mm thick
contains: gyri/convolutions, fissures, sulci, longitudinal fissure
Cerebrum provides
with the ability to read, write, speak, make calculations, compose music, to remember the past, plan for the future, imagine
longitudinal fissure
most prominent fissure
separates the cerebrum into left and right hemispheres
within the longitudinal fissure is the falx cerebri
Frontal lobe and temporal lobe is separated by
lateral cerebral sulcus
Frontal lobe and parietal lobe are separated by
central sulcus
Temporal lobe and occipital lobe are separated by
Prieto Occipital sulcus
immediately anterior to central sulcus
Precentral gyrus
Contains the primary motor area of the cerebral cortex
immediately posterior to the central sulcus
post central gyrus contains the primary somatosensory area of the cerebral cortex (sensory humunculus)
Cerebral white matter includes
association tracts: axons conduct nerve impulses between gyri in same hemisphere
Commissural tracts: axons that conduct nerve impulses from gyri in one cerebral hemisphere to corresponding gyri in the other cerebral hemisphere
Projection tracts: axons that conduct nerve impulses from the cerebrum to lower parts of the CNS
3 major groups of commissural tracts
corpus collosum-largest fiber bundle in the brain
Anterior commisure
Posterior commisure
3 basal nuclei
globus pallidus
putamen
caudate nucleus
What do basal nucleis
basal nuclei receive input from the cerebral cortex and provide output to motor parts of cortex
they also have connections with one another
basal nuclei function
regulate initiation and termination of movements
suppress unwanted movements and regulate muscle tone
control subconscious contractions of skeletal mm
influence cortical function
(initiating and terminating cognitive process like attention, money and planning)
Dysfunction of circuits between basal nuclei + limbic system
Perkinson’s disease
schizophrenia
obsessive compulsive disorder
chronic anxiety
Limbic system
emotional brain
plays a major role in a range of emotions
involved in olfaction and memory
