Brain Flashcards
The Brain
The brain is the most advanced and complex organ in our known universe. The human brain has about one hundred thousand million or one hundred billion neurons and from the age of thirty-five about 7,000 neurons are lost daily. The brain is composed of 75 to 80% water so dehydration can affect the proper functioning of the brain as well.
What is the brain made up of
Our brains consist of 60% white matter and 40% gray matter.
The Brain Vs. The Mind
The brain is a collection of interconnected neurons and other cells in the head that interact with the whole body and the environment. The mind is how we monitor and manage energy and information flow up through the body within ourselves and out into the world with others.
Evolution Of The Brain
The brain has developed over millennia and this history influences who we are today. In general terms, the brain can be seen in terms of three evolutionary components.
What are the three evolutionary components of the brain?
-The Reptilian Brain
-Paelomamillian Brain
-The Neomaillian Brain
The Reptilian Brain
The reptilian brain was the first to develop and much of the functions of this brain are instinctual and drive-based; fear, rage, eating, and mating which still retains a degree of control over our actions today.
The Paleomammalian Brain
The Paleomammalian Brain brought with it learning, memory and emotions.
The Neomammalian Brain
The Neomammalian brain is the third addition to our brain’s evolution. It is responsible for our cognition, social connection and sense of self.
