brain Flashcards
what is the role of the frontal lobe
higher executive functioning ie motor skills, planning, reasoning and problem solving
what does the occipital lobe do
interprets visual information, depth and distance.
what does the parietal lobe do
interprets sensory information including touch temperature, pain and pressure
research to support. how good
Raine - found that
what causes abnormal functioning of the brain? particularly the PFC
a mother who shakes her babies head when they start crying, bruising the PFC leading to abnormal functioning. alcohol consumption during pregnancy, lead exposure, head trauma (falling over/sporting injury).
what is the application
Raine suggests that meditation can help stimulate the PFC. we can screen for underachieve PFC/ abnormal brain structure of individuals likely to commit/recommit criminal behaviour so can have early intervention such as anger management.
what about crimes that are well thought out and cleverly constructed? what is the cause of this type of aggression.
the amygdala is under active/small. this part of the brain is associated with emotion, remorse and fear. suggesting you feel no guilt or mercy towards your victims.
give a case study to support.
phineas gage had a metal pole struck through his PFC cutting out part of his brain. they found that his personality completely changed. he went from being friendly, queer and charming to ignorant, rude and inappropriate.
low reliability/ generalisability. unscientific.
