Brain Flashcards
Controls voluntary movement (walking & speech), memory, intelligence & personality
Frontal lobe
Processes sensory info from the ears (hearing), smell
Temporal lobe
sensory areas associated w/ touch & temperature, pain, pleasure, pressure. Emotions & interpreting speech.
Parietal lobe
Processes sensory info from the eyes (visual)
Occipital lobe
control body temp., emotions, circadian rhythms (sleep rhythms) & feelings of hunger, pleasure &thirst.
Hypothalamus
Relay system-receives incoming sensory info and directs it to the appropriate parts of the cerebrum.
Thalamus
Joins the spinal cord & cerebrum. Site of automatic nervous control: heart & breathing rate, coughing, swallowing, vomiting, dilation of blood vessels
Medulla Oblongata
Largest part of brain. Receives & processes all sensory info. Initiates motor impulses of voluntary movement.
Cerebrum (FPOT)
Folded (convoluted) outer layer of cerebrum-functions: language, reasoning & perception
Cerebral cortex
Relays info between the cerebellum & the medulla
Pons
“Master Gland” produces many hormones, works w/ hypothalamus to link the nervous system and endocrine system
Pituitary gland
Brain is protected by three layer of membranes called
Meninges
Infection of the meninges
Meningitis
Contains thalamus, hypothalamus & cerebrum (lobes), largest part of the brain
Forebrain
Sits below thalamus, consists of 4 spheres of grey matter, connects forebrain to hindbrain, acts as relay center for eye & ear reflexes
Midbrain
Contains the medulla oblongata, cwerebellum & pons.
Hindbrain
Selective centre for incoming stimuli, ‘filters’ out noise-selective hearing. Makes you “forget”(eg. nose in view, chair, breathing)
Thalamus.
Controls ANS, regulates water & urine production, produces some hormones, center of thirst, hunger, sex drive & rage, connect to pituitary gland
Hypothalamus
Outer surface called cerebral cortex, is divided by corpus callosum (works like switch board), left side: speech writing, math (verbal) right side : 3-D, spatial relations (artistic musical)
Cerebrum
swollen part of spinal cord, controls breathing, heart rate & diameter of arteries, essential to life
Medulla oblongata
located above medulla at back of brain, responsible for balance, coordination & muscle tone, integrates cerebral impulses w/ sensory impulses
Cerebellum
name means bridge in french, top of spinal cord above medulla, connects cerebellum & medulla
Pons
form of energy
stimulus
converts one source of energy into another
sensory receptors
