Brachial Plexus Flashcards
What is the purpose of the brachial plexus?
to provide motor, sensory, and sympathetic innervation to the upper limb
What is the brachial plexus composed of?
the ventral rami of the spinal nerves C5-T1
How does the brachial plexus pass from the neck and upper thorax to the upper limb?
cervioaxillary canal
What innervates pectoralis major?
medial and lateral pectoral nerves
What innervates the anterior compartment of the arm?
musculocutaneous nerve (C5, 6, 7)
What provides innervation to pectoralis minor?
medial pectoral nerve
what is the terminal branch of the medial cord?
ulnar nerve (C8, T1)
the brachial plexus cords are named in regards to their relation to what structure?
axillary artery
What nerve from the posterior cord innervates the subscapularis?
upper subscapular nerve
what nerve from the posterior cord innervates the latissimus dorsi?
thoracodorsal n.
what nerve from the posterior cord innervates subscapularis and teres major?
lower subscapular nerve
What nerve specifically innervates the deltoid and teres minor?
axillary n. (C5, C6)
Which nerve innervates most ventral antebrachial muscles as well as the thenar muscles of the hand?
median nerve (C6-T1)
What nerves form the supraclavicular branches?
dorsal scapular n. - (C5) levator scapulae, rhomboid major and minor
suprascapular n. - (C5, C6) supra/infraspinatus
nerve to subclavius - (C5,6) subclavius
long thoracic n. - (C5,6,7) serratus anterior
What nerves come off the medial cord?
medial pectoral, meidal brachial cutaneous, medial antebrachial cutaneous
