Boys and Achievment: Internal Factors Flashcards
Feminisation of Education:
Sewel states boys fall behind due to education becoming feminised due to schools not naturing masculine traits such as leadership competitiveness. He argues coursework being the major cause of gender differences in underachievement.
Shortages of Male Primary Teachers:
Lack of male role models both in schools and at home. 1.5 million female-headed loan parent households in the UK. Only 14% of primary school teachers are male. Boys say they behave better with a male teacher due to them being able to impose strict discipline in order to concentrate.
Laddish Subcultures:
Epstein examined masculinity in schools and found WCB are more likely to be harassed and labelled as sissies and are subject to homophobic abuse. Non-manual or extension work is seen as effeminate an inferior therefore WCB tend to reject school work to avoid being picked on.
