Box 1- Patterns of urban change Flashcards
What is expected by 2030?
-60% of worlds pop will live in urban areas
Difference in megacities now compared to 1975…
- 20 megacities today
- 4 in 1975
Urbans trends in HICs…
- lower rates of urbanisation in places such as Europe + North America
- because the majority of the pop live in urban areas + rate of natural increase slowed down
Urban trends in LICs…
- high rates of urbanisation in places such as Asia + Africa (lower income countries)
- majority still live in urban areas however rural-urban migration is high
- Natural increase is high
4 main factors affecting rate of urbanisation..
- Natural increase
- rural-urban migration
- economic development
- location
How does natural increase affect rate of urbanisation?
- results in higher pop
- cities tend to have better health care =lower death rate
- more people means more economic development
How does rural-urban migration affect the rate of urbanisation?
-main driver because most of the migrants are young + migrate because of pull factors e.g jobs + better education
How does location affect the rate of urbanisation?
- cities usually on rivers/where the trade is good
- most megacitites are ports in which trade can thrive
How does economic development affect the rate of urbanisation?
-cities grow economically because of trade which attracts people + brings ideas + enterprises which aid cities
Pattern of emerging megacities…
-do not grow at a constant rate e.g Tokyo grew rapidly in 20th century the slowed down however e.g Lagos is now urbanising rapidly
