Bowlbys monotropic theory + E Flashcards
What does ‘monotropy’ mean?
The idea is that one relationship that an infant form has special significance.
What kind of standpoint is this from?
evolutionary
Who was Bowlby’s research influenced by?
Lorenz
What is the law of continuity
More constant / predicable time = better quality attachment.
What is the law of accumulated separation?
The effect of every separation adds up and decreases the quality of the attachment.
The safest is zero
Social releases are when…..
Babies are born with a set of innate cute behaviours. That encourage the attention from adults and make he adults attach to the baby.
What r some examples of social releases?
- Smiling
- Cooing
Critical period?
What is it?
Is a time period where if an attachment is not formed in this time a child will find it difficult to form another in their time.
What age is the critical period between?
6months - 2years
What is an internal working model?
Based on the relationship with PAF the child creates a mental representation of what relationships look like and will behave that way.
P: concept lacks validity
W
E: Schaffer and Emerson (1964) found that some formed multiple attachments meaning the the attachment was STRONGER not DIFFERENT in quality.
E: The theory could have been incorrect that there is a speciality of the first attachment of the PA
P: Evidence supporting social releases
S
E: Brazelton (1975) observed babies when the parents ignored their social releasers and found that they babies became increasing distressed and some eventually stopped and lay motionless
E: TMT the role of social releasers in ED are important and illustrates the concept.
P: Support for the internal working model
S
E: Bailey (1975) tested this w. 99 mothers and found that mother with poor attachment = poorly attached babies
E: TST significance of the early attachment on the IWM
P: Feminist concerns
W
E: The laws of continuity and accumulated separation suggests that it negatively impacts the child.
Barman (1994) notes that ‘ beliefs like these sets up mothers to take the blame for anything that goes wrong with thee child’
E: The questions the necessity and fairness of the research as it can have negative repercussions . (More harm than good?)
