What is the main point about Bowlby’s theory?
Attachment is innate and adaptive, not learnt.
Describe why attachment is innate and adaptive.
Because attachment has long term benefits. They are adaptive, meaning that they change their behaviour best suited for survival.
Describe what the sensative period is and how it works.
Sensative period is during the second quarterof the first year, (3-6months). This is an essential period for creating attachments because infants are more sensative to it.
Describe what adaptive caregiving is and how it works.
Babies have social releasers - smiling, crying - which evoke a caregiving response.
Describe what a secure base is and how it works.
Attachment acts as a secure base. Children can explore whilst having a safe haven. Fosters independence.
Describe what a monotropy is and how it works.
Bias attachment towards primary figure - monotropy. Provides main foundation for emotional develop, self esteem and alter relationships.
Describe what a hierarchy is and how it works.
Attachment towards secondary figureS - hierarchy. Provides emotional develop, safety net, social develop.
Describe what the internal working model is and how it works.
Model that is formed from emotional relationships and shows what to expect from peers ect.
Describe what the continuity hypothesis is and how it works.
The consistancy between early attachments and later life (internal working model).
