Bovine anatomy Flashcards
Ruminant saliva
Contains high concentrations of sodium bicarbonate and phosphate buffers. Help neutralize the acids
Dental pad
No upper incisors. A flat, thick, connective tissue structure
Reticulum
The smallest and most cranial compartment. (Honeycomb appearance)
Traumatic reticulopericarditis
“Hardware disease” heavy objects go through wall of reticulum, go through diaphragm and into the pericardium
Rumen
Large fermentation vat located on the LEFT side of the abdomen providing vitamins B & K and major source of protein
Eructate
Digestion of plant material results in CO2 and methane (burping)
Volatile fatty acids
Fermentation of plant material which are absorbed by the liver and concerted into glucose
Omasum
Assists in decreasing size of digesta and re absorption of water. Made or many muscular folds
Abomasum
“True stomach”
Esophageal groove
In the young ruminant, extends the reticular wall which skips the rumen and reticulum going straight to the omasum
Small intestine
Lie entirely on the right of the midline
Large intestine
Contain a “spiral colon”
Bovine RBCs
Resistant to rouleaux formation
Small ruminant RBCs
Have smallest rbcs of species
Eosinophil
Red, round, and small granules in the cytoplasm
