Boundaries Flashcards
Destructive (Convergent)
Move towards eachother
Create explosive composite volcanoes due to high subduction of one plate
May cause deep earthquakes that cause tsunamis e.g. 2004 Asian Tsunami
CONTINENTALS: Severe shallow earthquakes, no volcanoes, form high fold mountains instead e.g. Himilayas
OCEANICS: Shallow- deep earthquakes, may cause tsunamis e.g. Asian 2004 tsunami. May create Island arcs, deep ocean trench, underwater volcanoes
O+C: Explosive comp volcanoes as high subduction, magma easily push through faults, deep earthquakes in Benioff, may also create fold mountains + deep ocean trenches
Constructive (Divergent)
Create submarine volcanoes that rise to form islands e.g. Iceland
Create mid ocean ridges
Shield volcanoes, less explosive
Conservative
No volcanic activity as plates slide along so no subduction
Intense, shallow earthquakes as plates build pressure that is suddenly released- strong L waves
Create transform fault where more pressure can build
