Botulism and Tetanus Flashcards
1
Q
How does the botulism toxin become internalised?
A
Binding of of carboxy-terminal end of the HC domain of the light chain to a polysialoganglioside (PSG) receptor on the presynaptic membrane
Then binding to a protein receptor (either synaptotagmin on SV2) located either inside the exocytosed synaptic vesicle or on the presynaptic membrane
2
Q
What is the pathogenesis of the BoNT toxin
A
Light chain encodes the metalloproteinase domain which cleaves the SNARE receptor necessary for neurotransmitter exocytosis - act presynaptically at the peripheral cholinergic neuromuscular junction to inhibit acetylcholine release
