Botany - leaves and leaf arrangement Flashcards
Leaves are arranged at one leaf per node on different sides along the stem
Alternate leaf arrangement
The flattened, green portion of the leaf
Blade
A leaf with the blade divided into multiple leaflets
Compound leaf
Vegetative plant parts that are lateral outgrowths of stems that have developed special structures for photosynthesis
Leaf
A leaf margin that is smooth with no serrations or teeth
Continuous
A protruding part of the leaf margin, alternating with sinuses
Lobe
The edge of a leaf blade
Margin
Leaves arising from opposite sides of the same node
Opposite leaves
Leaves with netted veins having several large veins radiating into the blade from the leaf stalk at the level where the leaf stalk and blade join
Palmate venation
A compound leaf with all the leaflets arising from one point at the end of leaf stalk
Palmately compound leaf
Leaves with large veins that are essentially parallel to one another and are not connected by lateral veins
Parallel venation
The leaf stalk
Petiole
Leaved with netted veins where secondary veins extend laterally from a single midrib
Pinnate venation
A compound leaf with the leaflets arranged along both sides of the midrib
Pinnately compound leaf
Hairs or fuzz found on various plant parts
Pubescence
A leaf margin with serrations or “teeth” along its edge
Serrate
Without a petiole (as in some leaves), or without a pedicel (as in some flowers and fruits)
Sessile
Leaf blades consisting of one continuous blade: not divided
Simple leaves
An indented part of the leaf margin, alternating with lobes
Sinus
Leaflike appendages often found on either side of the base of the petiole; they may subtend the leaf, but they are not actual parts of the leaf
Stipules
Three or more leaves at a node
Whorled leaf arrangement
