Globalisation and migration have played a part in Boston’s sense of place, as shown by new shops with names from other parts of Europe. In addition, the slogan used during the EU Referendum was: “Vote Leave. Take Control” suggesting that Boston has lost control of its image
Jobs in Boston
There are some benefits that globalisation and migration have on Boston. For example, although migration is reducing the number of available jobs in the town, many of the jobs that immigrants are taking are jobs that the majority of Brits would not do (e.g. menial labour). This results in more taxes being paid, and therefore more money available for the town
Generation divide in Boston
The younger generation may hold different views about globalisation and migration because they are used to the European influences on their town, as they have grown up with it, whereas much of the older generation were alive when there were far fewer immigrants in the country
Division in Boston
Contrasting impressions of Boston that are connoted in the text include the fact that, “newspapers call [it] the most divided town in Britain.” Furthermore, the people of Boston generally do not like having foreign links, yet for centuries, Boston had closer links with the Netherlands than with the UK
