Unification of Muslims Basis
- Ummah, worldwide community with same faith and culture
- From loyalty to tribe –> Unity under one God, Allah
- Role of Ummah is to support all Muslims

The Ummah in regards to the 5 pillars
- Shahadah - united in Oneness of Allah (Tawhid) and Muhammad
- Salah - United in prayer, especially at mosque
- Zakah - Supports the poor amonth them
- Sawm - United in fasting in Ramadan
- Hajj - All Muslims together at Makkah from all over

- Does not force Islam on anyone
- Respects Creation, respecting all
What is Shari’ah Law
- “Pathway to be followed” (Law)(Code of Behaviour)
Deals with - Societal issues (Crime, politics, economic
- Family issues (Divorce, marriage, children
- Personal issues (diet, hygiene, sex)
- Religious issues (prayer, fasting)

Origins of Shari’ah Law
Qur’an and Hadith
- Developed unfer the 4 Rightly Guided Khalifahs and has developed as society changed
- 4 Sunni and 1 Shi’ah schools of thought
Shari’ah as a system
- As a legal system is very broad
- Prioritizes punishment rather than rehabiliation, and prison
- Most restrictive against women
Application of Shari’ah Law in countries
Classic Shari’ah systems
- Entirely on Shari’ah law (Civil law)
- Harsh penalties
Mixed Systems
- Most Muslim countries
- Used to inform Civil Law
- No harsh penalties
Secular Systems
- Not used at all in the legal system
Halal vs Haram

- Permissible or lawful
- Foods, right mindset or lawful actions

- Unlawful, sinful
Maboosh
- Middle ground
Description of Zakah
- Legal requirement
- Purification of Wealth and soul, gets rid of greed
- Protects Giver on
- End of Lunar year
- 2.5% of wealth to charity (orhans,poor, needy, widows)
- In muslim countries, collected like tax, Person -> Government -> Needy
- Non-muslim, more personal, self arranged and decide how its used
Ummah in regards to Zakah
- Returning to Allah the gift he gave to you
- Cares for God’s people
- Love of neighbour and concern - alms, money, food
- Obligation to take of God’s people
- Eliminates inequality
- Concrete act of love for neighbour
Muslims Eligible to receive Zakah
- Poor Muslims
- Needy
- Muslims in Debt
- Muslim converts - settle into new life
- Muslim Scholars and teachers, help with study
- Prisoners of war, pay for release
Description of Sadaqah
Voluntary charity
- Muslims encouraged to give more
- Compassion, love, friendship and generosity
- in secret
Describe what Muslim Aid does
- Relief to disaster victims
- Looks for long term solutions of poverty
- Development for water, shelter and healthcare
- Works alongside people to find solutions
- Operates in over 70 countries, together with catholic aid organizations
