When a child is born what is said

A

The father of a male welcomes them by whispering the
- Adhan Right ear (call to prayer) - the second line being Shahadah
- Iqamah Left ear- command to rise and worship (essentially the same as adhan, less repeats, “Prayer has started”
*These setup the child for a faithful life

What happens shortly after the baby’s birth, first ceremony

A

Tahneek - Parent rubs honey or crushed date on the baby’s gums or tongue
- symbolises sweet beginning, child to grow up kind

What happens 7 days after the birth

A

Aqeeqah
- Animal sacrifice, 1-girl, 2-boy, 1/3 eaten, 2/3 to friends, neighbours and poor (Gift from Allah)
- Shave the head - weight of hair is donated to poor (in gold or silver)
- Child named from Muhammad’s family or friends, or Allah’s 99 names with abd (servant)

First time the Angel Jibril appears to Muhammad
Start of the child’s religious education, learns the first line of the Qur’an

  • Companionship

Describe the Mahr

A

Dowry
- Something of value that is agreed upon
- Safe guard for the women who don’t work
- Given partly by bridegroom to wife on the day of marriage, rest paid in a divorce

Describe the Nikah

A
  • Short marriage ceremony, usually in a mosque
  • Wali (guardian) accompanies the bride or represents her
  • Imam presides, reads Surah 4:1, Khutbah on marriage
  • Consent - acceptance of vows and marriage
  • Signing the contract - legal contract with 2 male witnesses

Process of Divorce

A
  • Looked down upon
    Man requesting a divorce
  • iddah (waiting period for 3 menstrul cycles, 3 months, or until birth of child)
  • time for reconciliation
  • Repudiation (“I divorce you” 3x talaq by the man)
    Woman requesting divorce
  • Must persuade a court she has a good reason for divorce, abuse, or crazy
  • Boys up to 7 & girls up to 9 go to the mother
  • older than that they decide which parent
  • Male relatives financially responsible for her

Process of Death and Funeral

A
  • Last words being “Allah” - shahada said
  • Death is beginning of eternal life
    After Death
  • Body faced towards Qiblah
  • Washed 3x, husband washed by wife, wife washed by a women
  • wrapped in a shroud (cotton sheets) or ihram (equal before Allah)
  • carried to mosque or cemetary, mourned
    Burial
  • ASAP after death, directly into earth, head facing Qiblah

Process after burial and mourning

A
  • Visit by Munkar and Nadir question the dead preparing for the Day of Judgement
  • Mourners pray the Al Fatihah, and Shahada
  • To help the dead answer the questions of the 2 angels
    Mourning
  • No excessive wailing or asking “Why?”
  • Allah appoints death
  • Mourning lasts for 40 days, Family prays and recits the Qur’an
  • Palm leaf placed on grave (peace)
  • Give food to the poor
