Conservative

Orthodox
- Means daughter of Valor
- Takes place at home, or at synagogue with only women
- Sunday not Shabbat
- NO reading of Sefer Torah
- Read a book other than the Tenakh

7 Stages
- Working too Hard, trust in Money, injustice of the world, denial of pleasure
- Short lived political power, relationships, all must die
- Dirt thrown on casket, for closure, wash hands to move on with life
Ritual of Mourning
- Too little or too much mourning is bad
1. Tearing of clothes (true sorrow)
2. Shiva - 7, mourners stay at home and do not have to do anything, only to go to Shabbat.
-Jewish Festival takes priority
3. sheloshim, 30 days, no big event, then back to normal life
4. ONLY IF A PARENT, until 1 year annivesari, recite the Kaddusg each month, lit candle, memorial stone on grave
Treyfah foods
- Food that may be eaten
- Opposite is Treyfah
Examples are - Pigs, rabbits, camels, Eagles, vultures, shellfish or osyers, unwashed vegetables and eggs, meals with milk and meat, Blood
Reasons for Kashrut
- Health (e,g Milk and Meat)
- Respect to Nature
- Customs of Middle East (Camels are useful, pigs are not food efficient
- Discipline in food, leads to values
- Torah says so
- Call to Holiness, all of life is prayer, as well as eating
- Kashrut separates Jews from others (culture)
- Kashrut calls Jews to purity and in obedience
Kashrut Clothings vs Treyfah
- No mixing
- God is 1, everything is distinct, not symbolic mixture (like marriage)
- Shatnez (linen and wool)
- Modesty, Ecology (humanely) and Fair trade
Roles of Family
- Parents are seen as partners in God’s creation of each human being, both raising a child to be kind and generous, and grow up as faithful Jew
Hasidic Jews - Boys receive religious education, Girls Loyal wives and mothers, large families
Orthodox - Only males go to Friday evenin Shabbat
- Women are not involved in the service of Shabbat
Conservative - Approve of same sex couples and rabbis
Nurturing the young
-Parents teach their children about Judaism and duties as Jews
- Children to be a mensch, kind responsible and honourable
- Parents provide for the children with food, a house clothes and education and support them
- Children are exposed to Jewish practices and traditions to become better Jews, an interest
Care of Elderly
- Children tend to Parent’s needs
- May only place them in their own home or a facility if they cannot care for them, themselves, or if the parents are happier to to not be in the child’s home
- Grandchildren can interact with grandparents, and maybe help them,
- Jewish respoect and honour, to learn about the care of relatives
- Honour your father and thy mother
