Bones Test Flashcards
Functions of the skeletal system
- Provides a flexible framework that supports the body and gives it shape. 2.protects the internal organs 3. A storage place for essential minerals such as calcium and phosphorus 4.serves as a center of production for red blood cells.
What are the 4 types of bones.
Slif. Short Long Irregular Flat.
Epiphyses
The enlarged ends of a long bone… Epiphyses are mainly composed of spongy bone tissue.
Cartilage
a spongy tissue, acts as a buffer between bones like a shock absorber.
Periosteum
is a tough membrane that adheres tightly to the outer surface of the bone. Periosteum is vital in nourishing the bones and in producing bone cells.
Shaft
the narrowing between joint ends
Medullary canal
is a narrow space located throught the length of the shaft. It is filled with yellow bone marrow.
Joint
The point at which 2 bones meet. The function of joints is to allow for movement of the body framework.
Ligaments
strong bands or chords of muscle that connects bones together or keeps organs in place
What are the 3 types of joints
- freely moveable: example: knee, shoulder 2. partially moveable: example: symphysis pubis 3. immoveable: example: skull
Differences in the male system
