Bones of the upper limb (Detailed) Flashcards
What is the pectoral/shoulder girdle?
-It consists of the scapula at the back and the clavicle anteriorly
-Together with the proximal part of the humerus it makes up the bony framework of the shoulder
What is the clavicle
-A double-curved long bone which connects the arm to the trunk
-It articulates medially with the sternum at the sternoclavicular joint, and laterally with the acromion process of the scapula.
What are the three parts of the clavicle
-Medial (sternal) end
-Lateral (acromial) end
-Shaft
What is the scapula
-A flat bone that sits on the back
-Serves as a point attachment for many muscles
-There is a superior angle at the top and an inferior angle
What are the three borders of the scapula
-A medial border
-A lateral border
-A superior border
3 types of processes
-Spine of the scapula
-The spinous process
-Acromion process
The 2 surfaces of the scapula
-The anterior surface which is the costal surface and lies against the ribs
-The posterior surface is divided by this spinous process into two halves
What is the subscapular fossa
A fossa found on the anterior surface of the scapula (it is found underneath the scapula)
Glenoid fossa
It is the point of articulation with the humerus
What is the infra glenoid tubercle
The point of origin for the long head of the triceps
What is the supra glenoid tubercle
The point where the long head of the bicep muscles attach
What is the suprascapular notch
-A notch at the top of the scapula
-Medial to the coracoid process
