Bones of the Limbs Flashcards
What is the Pectoral Girdle (shoulder girdle)?
Connects upper limbs to bones of the axial skeletal
What 2 bones does the Pectoral Girdle consist of?
- clavicle (collar bone)
- scapula (shoulder blade)
How is the upper limb directly connected to the axial skeleton?
- other end of clavicle attaches to axial
- other end of scapula does not attach to anything
What are the limbs of the arms divided into?
- arm/brachium = upper arm
- forearm/antebrachium = radius & ulna
- hand = wrist, palm, fingers
What is the pelvic girdle (hip girdle)?
Paired hip bones forming basin-like structure
What are some characteristics of the Pelvic Girdle?
- strongly attached to axial skeletaon
- deep sockets
- more stable than pectoral girdle
- less freedom of movement
What are the 3 bones of the pelvic girdle?
- ilium
- ischium
- pubis
How are the bones of the pelvic girdle connected?
Fuse during childhood
How are the bones of the pelvic girdle connected?
Fuse during childhood
What is the structure of the ilium bones in the pelvic girdle?
2 outer large bones (wings with iliac crests)
- connected to sacrum
- through sacroiliac joints
(slide 6 and 7)
What is the structure of the ischium bones in the pelvic girdle?
2 smaller, ring-shaped bones below iliums
- connected directly to ilium and oubis
What is the structure of the pubis bones in the pelvic girdle?
Piece of bone connecting ischiums
What is the True Pelvis?
Area from the pelvic inlet to pelvic outlets - under sides of ilium
(slide 8)
What is the False Pelvis?
Area above the pelvic inlet covering the ilium
What are the differences in male/female pelvis?
Male:
- large & heavy
- heart-shaped pelvic inlet
- narrow, deep true pelvis
- narrow outlet
- < 90° pubic arch
Female:
- light & delicate
- oval pelvic inlet
- wide, shallow true pelvis
- wide outlet
- > 90° pubic arch
