Bones of the cranium and orbit Flashcards
How many bones of the skull are there?
There are 22 bones united at immobile joints called sutures. Cranium, Facial and Mandible
What are the names of the facial bones?
Zygomatic
Maxillary
Nasal
Lacrimal
Vomer
Palatine
Inferior conchae
Manidble
What are the names of the bones of the cranium?
Frontal
Parietal
Occipital
Temporal
Sphenoid
Ethmoid
What bones make up the roof of the orbit?
Frontal and sphenoid
What bones make up the floor of the orbit?
Maxilla, zygomatic and palatine
What bones make up the medial wall of the orbit?
Ethmoid
Lacrimal
Maxillary
Sphenoid
Frontal
What bones make up the lateral wall of the orbit?
Sphenoid and zygomatic
What is the optic canal and where is it located?
It transmits the optic nerve and ophthalmic artery. Located between lesser and greater wings of the sphenoid
What is the superior orbital fissure and where is it located?
It transmits most of the other vascular and neural structures into the orbit. Attachment point for LR muscle. Located at the gap between the lesser and greater wings of the sphenoid
What is the inferior orbital fissure and where is it located?
It transmits the zygomatic branch of the maxillary nerve and the ascending branches from the pterygopalatine ganglion. It separates the greater wing of the sphenoid and the maxilla
What is the annulus of zinn and where is it located?
It is a ring of fibrous tissue surrounding the optic nerve at its entrance at the apex of the orbit. It is the common origin of the four recti muscles. Located anterior to superior orbital fissure and optic canal
What is the paranasal sinus and where is it located?
Lightens the skull, drain mucous secretions, help voice resonate, warm and humidify inspired air
What is the cavernous sinus and where is it located?
It is one of several drainage pathways for the brain that sits in the middle. The cavernous sinus is located on either side of the sella turcica and superior to the sphenoid bone.
