Bones in the head and neck Flashcards
What are the joints of the skull called
Sutures
Three sutures of the cranium
Coronal suture, squamous suture, lambdoid suture
Eight bones of the cranium
Frontal (1), Sphenoid (1) Ethmoid (1), Parietal (2), Temporal (2), Occipital (1)
What is the sqaumous part of the frontal bone
The forehead
What is the glabella
Most forward projection of the frontal bone
The function of the supraorbital foramen (notch)?
Allows supraorbital artery and nerve to pass to forehead
What is the orbital part of the frontal bone
Outer wall of the orbits (eye)
Function of the supraorbital margin
A thickening of bone that functions to protect the eyeball
Where is the coronal suture located
Between parietal bones and frontal bone
Where is the sagittal suture located
Between right and left parietal bones
Where is the lambdoid suture located
Between parietal bones and occipital bone
Where are the squamous sutures located
Between the parietal and temporal bones on each side of the skull
What is the foramen magnum
Means large hole, hole that brain connects with spinal cord
Where are the occipital condyles located
Flank the foramen magnum and articulate with 1st vertebra
What is the function of the hypoglossal canal
Allows cranial nerve XII (the hypoglossal nerve)
