Bones and Joints Flashcards
No motion at all. Example: the skull and between the sternum and 1st set of ribs.
Fibrous Joint
Some motion with Hyaline cartilage present. Example: vertebrae and the pubic symphisis
Cartilaginous Joint
It allows internal and external rotation ex. wrist and elbow
Pivot Joint
Able to bend or straighten ex. elbow or knee
Hinge joint
Flexion, extension, adduction, and abduction.
Condyle joint
Flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, and circumduction. ex. metacarpals, matatarsals, or thorax
Saddle joint
Makes a gliding movement ex. between the metacarpals and hand and metatarsals and foot.
Plane joint
Moves backwards, forwards, sideways, and rotations. ex. upper arm/shoulder and femur/hips
Ball in Socket Joint
A layer of spongey Bone between 2 thin layers of compact bone. They have marrow but no cavity for it. ex. skull, rib cage, shoulder
Flat Bone
A shaft and 2 ends. It’s long rather than wide. It has a thick outside layer with a bone marrow filled cavity. It has spongey Bone on the ends
Long Bone
Has thin layers of spongey Bone surrounded by compact bone.
Irregular bone
Cube shaped with vertical and horizontal dimensions being equal. It consists of mostly spongey Bone. The outside layer is a thin layer of compact bone.
Short bone.
Builds up bones and tissues after they have been broken down.
Osteoblast
Break down and dissolve damaged/dead bone cells.
Osteoclast
A solid, hard bone that makes up the outer layer of all bones and shafts of long bones.
Compact Bone
