bones Flashcards
Central canal (in osteon)
holds a nerve, artery, and vein
Canaliculus(in osteon)
Tiny canals that connect mini caves known as Lacuna
Lacuna(in osteon)
house matured osteoblasts that become trapped by their bone matrix secretion and
mature into Osteocytes to maintain bone matrix
Lamella(in osteon)
rings of bone tissue
Bone tissue
Specialized connective tissue
Bone matrix
secreted by osteoblasts
Maintained: by osteocytes
broken down by osteoclasts
spongy bone
is found deep to the compact bone,
where there are medullary cavities for bone marrow
why is their compact bone on the outside and spongy on the inside?
This organization of bone allows it strength to withstand weight distribution of body while
ensuring they are light enough to allow for efficient gross body movement.
structural unit of bone:
osteon
Irregular bones:
vertebre
Sesamoid bones
almond shaped bones that form within tendons
Sutural bones:
tiny bones between cranial bones
Diaphysis
Shaft of long bone
Periosteum
a fibrous membrane covering made up of dense irregular connective tissue
Perforating fibers
collagen fibers of the periosteum that penetrate into the bone
Epiphysis
The ends of the long bone
Articular cartilage
covers the epiphysis in place of the periosteum. The glassy hyaline cartilage
provides a smooth surface to minimize friction at joints
Epiphyseal lines:
Once the long bone has stopped growing, these epiphyseal plates are replaced
with bone and appear as thin, barely discernible remnants
Yellow bone marrow:
adipose tissue found in medullary cavities
Red bone marrow:
Blood forming tissue found in medullary cavities
Endosteum
Delicate lining of shaft(medullary cavity)
Axial skeleton
Cranium, Vertebral Column, Ribcage
Appendicular Skeleton
Pectoral girdle, bones of the upper limb, pelvic girdle, Bones of the
lower limb.
