bones Flashcards
how does the skeleton provide support
keeps the body upright and provides sites for muscle and tissue attatchment
how does the skeleton provide protection
cranium protects brain, ribs protect heart and lungs, vertebrae protects spinal cord decreasing the risk of injury to reproductive organs on impact
how does the skeleton provide movement
bones from joints and act as levers allowing muscles to pull on them producing movement
how does the skeleton produce blood cells
bone marrow produces white and red blood cells and platelets. Bone marrow is found in the pelvis, femur, humerus, sternum
what minerals does the skeleton store
calcium, iron and phosphorus are released into the body when needed
endocrine regulation
hormones are secreted controlling various physiological pathways
describe the role and structure of the cranium
the cranium protects the brain and provides a framework for teeth and sensory structures. It has 8 cranial bones and 14 facial bones
describe the role and structure of the vertebral column
it provides structural support to our head and helps maintain our posture. It’s made up of individual vertebrate interconnected by cartilaginous intervertebral discs. 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 scrum and 3-5 coccyx
