Bones - 09/29/2015 Flashcards
1
Q
Functions of Bones
A
- Support
- Protection
- Movement
- Mineral Storage- calcium
- Hematopoiesis- blood cell production “red bone marrow” (young people)
- Triglyceride storage- lipid “yellow bone marrrow” (older people). Adipose Connective Tissue
2
Q
Bones of the Skeleton (two main groups)
A
- Axial skeleton (brown)- skull, vertebrae column, thoracic cavity
- Appendicular skeleton (yellow)- limb and limb points of attachment.
3
Q
Cartilages in Bones
A
- Hylene cartilage (articular cartilage)- joints
- Fibro cartilages- intervertebral discs
- Elastic cartilage- external ear
4
Q
Classifications of bones by shape
A
- long bones (height is greater than width)- hands, limbs and leg bones.
- Short Bones (squared shape)- carpals and tarsals.
- Flat Bones- skull, sternum, scapulae and ribs.
- Irregular Bones (unusual shape) - hip bone and vertebrae.
5
Q
Bone Markings
A
Bulges, depressions and holes serve as…..
- sites of attachment for muscles, ligaments and tendons
- joint surfaces
- conduits of blood vessels and nerves
6
Q
Cells of Bones
A
- Osteogenic cells divides and it becomes osteoblasts.
- Osteoblasts make collagen fibers and ground substance. Bone making cells.
- Osteocyte are mature bone cell. They are communication signal cells.
- Osteoclasts digestion/absorption of bone. Gets rid of old bone.
- These four cells are organic chemical composition of bone.
7
Q
Chemical Composition of Bone: Organic
A
Osteod- organic bone matrix secreted by osteoblasts (young people)
8
Q
Chemical Composition of Bone: Inorganic
A
Hydroxyapatites (mineral salts)
- 65% of bone mass.
- Mainly calcium phosphate crystals.
- Responsible for hardness and resistance to compression.
