Bone regions Flashcards
The two different types of bone regions…
- Compact
2. Spongy
Describe the structure of the compact (cortical) bone region. (3 points)
> Solid, hard layer
Strong
Few spaces
Functional unit of compact bone region?
Osteon
What is the concentric lamellae?
Circular plates of mineralised ECM
What does the central canal of compact bone contain?
Blood vessels and nerves
What is the lacunae and what cells does it contain?
The space between the concentric lamellae
Osteocytes
Describe the structure of the spongy (trabecular/cancellous) bone region? (3 points)
> Located on the interior of the bone
Protected by covering of compact bone
Many spaces filled
What is the functional unit of spongy bone?
Trabeculae
What are canaliculi?
Channels filled with ECF
What is calcification and which cell initiates it?
The process where mineral salts and ions are deposited to crystallise and harden bone tissue
Osteoblasts (bone building cells)
Describe the function of spongy bone.
> Supports/protects red bone marrow
> Reduces weight
Function of compact bone. (2)
> Resists stress
> Protection and support
Name the 4 zones within the epiphyseal plate
- Zone of resting cartilage - anchor
- Zone of proliferating cartilage
- Zone of Hypertrophic cartilage
- Zone of calcified cartilage
