Bone disorders Flashcards
What are the common sites of fracture in osteoporosis?
neck of femur
vertebral body
distal radius
humeral neck
________ are antiresorptive drugs used in osteoporosis
Bisphosphonates
What are the concerns with long term use of Bisphosphonates (e.g. Alendronate)?
- osteonecrosis of the jaw
- oesophageal carcinoma
- atypical fractures
What drug stimulates bone growth?
Teriparatide (parathyroid hormone analogue)
How do steroids increase the risk of osteoporosis?
Steroids reduce:
- osteoblast activity
- calcium absorption
What is Paget’s disease?
Abnormal osteoclastic activity, followed by increased osteoblastic activity, resulting in abnormal structure and risk of fracture.
How does Paget’s disease present?
- Bone pain (weight bearing)
- deformities
- deafness
- compression neuropathy
What is Osteogenesis Imperfecta? What’s the clinical picture?
Genetic disorder of collagen production
Children with multiple fractures
- may have blue sclera
- may affect dentition
