The category of bones that are as long as it is wide, and provides stability and some movement. (Ex: Carpal and Tarsal bones)
Short bones
The category of bones that protect internal organs and provide large areas of attachment for muscles
(Ex: Frontal bone, coastal)
Flat bones
The category of bones that are longer than they are wide and support body weight and facilitate movement.
(Ex: Femur)
Long Bones
The category of bones that are embedded in tendons and protect tendons from stress and wear
(Ex: Patella)
Sesamoids
The category of bones that includes all bones that don’t fit in the other categories
(Ex: Sacrum)
Irregular Bones
The communication between 2 or more bones (A joint)
Articulation
The round process at the end of a bone that articulates with another bone.
Condyle
The end of a bone
Epiphysis
Where bone growth occurs (Common name = Growth plate)
Epiphyseal Plate
Closed growth plate
Epiphyseal Line
The shaft of a long bone
Diaphysis
Chamber in a bone that contains bone marrow
Medullary Cavity
Contains lots of RBC’s (Red blood cells) and located in flat bones
Red Marrow
Fat cells stored in the medullary cavity of long bones
Yellow Marrow
The outward flare between the Epiphysis and Diaphysis of a bone
Metephysis
