Bone Characteristics Flashcards
What are the functions of the skeleton (bones in general)?
- Give a rigid framework that supports and protects the body and all of it’s organ systems
- Allows for attachments of soft tissues and creation of levers to move
- Stores calcium
- Produces blood
What do Calcium compounds allow the bone to do?
Allows the bone to compress without breaking
What does collagen allow the bone to do?
Allows the bone more flexibility and elasticity to absorb shock
What are the two types of bone material?
- Cortical bone (compact)
- Cancellous bone (spongy or trabecular)
What is cortical bone?
- Compact bone
- Handles compression loads
- The outer shell of the bone
What is cancellous bone?
- Spongy bone
- Handles compression, bending, and tension loads
- In the middle of the bones
How often does a full bone recycle into a new bone?
About every 7 years
What do healthy bones do when it comes to reshaping?
There is a balance of creating new bone and absorbing back old bone
What are the two cells that deal with bone growth? What does each do?
- Osteoblasts: bone growth (too much = bone deformities)
- Osteoclasts: reabsorption of bone (too much = bones are brittle)
What is Wolf’s Law and Rate of Bone Development?
- Bone in a healthy individual will adapt to the loads or stresses under which it is often placed under
- Every change in function of a bone results in internal architectural changes
How do skeletons develop in inactive people?
- “Bone atrophy”
- They don’t adapt
- Bone doesn’t grow, it just get eaten away
- Causes skeleton to become lighter with the loss of mineralization
Why is it important for people to do multiple activities?
It forces the bones to grow in more than just one way, so they will be all around stronger
