What are the two main routes of osteomyelitis infection?

A

Haematogenous seeding from an infection site elsewhere in the body, this is more common in children.
Continuous osteomyelitis occurs when there is direct contact of infection tissue and bone

What are the investiagtions for osteomyelitis?

A

Bloods include: FBC, inflammatory markers and blood cultures
Culture any source of infection
MRI is the imaging modality of choice but a plain x ray can still show changes

What is the management of osteomyelitis?

A

Commonest cause is staph aureus so it is treated with 4 weeks IV flucloxacillin followed by 4-8weeks oral antibiotics

What is the presentation of septic arthritis?

A

It presents with an acutely hot, swollen joint that is very painful and has restricted movements. Some patients have fever and rigors but absence of these do not exclude this diagnosis.
