Bone and Joint Infections Flashcards
What are the 2 different classifications of osteomyelitis?
Haematogenous
Non-haematogenous
What are the 2 different classifications of non-haematogenous osteomyelitis?
Direct inoculation - trauma, surgery, etc.
Local invasion - pressure ulcer, sinus disease, etc.
How does haematogenous osteomyelitis develop?
Bacteria colonise the venous sinuses in the looped capillaries going through the metaphysis.
Why are bacteria able to colonise venous sinuses in metaphyses?
Slow flow through looped capillaries in venous sinuses
Venus sinusoids are protected from immune response due to poorly developed RE system and poor penetration of WBCs
Leads to abscess formation
What will colonisation of venous sinuses eventually lead to?
Abscess formation in metaphysis
