Bone Flashcards
What does bone develop from?
Mesenchyme
What is bone composed of?
- cells
- matrix
- mineral
Bone mineral
calcium hydroxyapatite
Mineral and collagen fibers give bone resilience and hardness
Bone cells & their function
Osteoblasts - synthesize the organic components of the bone matrix
Osteoclasts - reabsorb bone (bone remodelling)
Osteocytes - maintain bone matrix
Bone Development
a) Primary (immature, woven)
b) Secondary (mature, lamellar) –> collagen fibers organized into plates (lamellas)
Subclassification of Lamellar Bone
a) dense (compact)
b) spongy (cancellous) [bone marrow in long bone]
Same composition, but spongy has cavities within it
Two types of bone marrow?
Red
Yellow - fatty
What is the dense tissue that covers bone?
Periosteum
How are flat bones created? Examples?
Intramembranous Ossification
skull, maxilla, mandible
How are long bones created? Example?
Enchondral Ossification
femur
