Bonding & Struture: Metallic Bonding Flashcards
What are alloys?
Mixture of metal with other elements.
Why are alloys harder than pure metals?
- different sized atoms
- distorts the layers
- so they can’t slide over each other
Why are metals soft and malleable?
The layers of atoms can slide over each other.
What are metallic bonds?
Forces of attraction between delocalised electrons and nuclei of metal ions
Why can metals conduct heat?
Delocalised electrons can carry heat through the whole structure.
What properties do metals have?
- high melting and boiling points
- good conductors of heat and electricity
- malleable, soft
Why are metals good conductors of electricity?
They have delocalised electrons which can carry a charge through the substance.
Why are metals good conductors of electricity?
They have delocalised electrons which can carry a charge through the substance.
Why do metals have high melting and boiling points?
Strong forces of attraction that require more energy toovercome
Where is a metallic bond found?
Within a metal
