Bonding - ionic, covalent and metallic Flashcards
what is ionic bonding?
electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
what are the three properties of ionic molecules?
- conduct electricity
- high melting points
- tend to dissolve in water - water molecules (polar) pull the ions away from the lattice
what is covalent bonding ?
when atoms share a pair of electrons to gain a full outer shell
what is a covalent bond?
a shared pair of electrons
what is coordinate bonding?
when shared lone pairs of electrons come from one bonding atom , and the second atom has a vacant orbital
what is metallic bonding?
the electrostatic forces of attraction between the nucleus and delocalised electron.
what are the foyr proeprties of metallic bonding?
insoluble, high melting/boiling points, malleable and they conduct electricity
what two factors affect the strength of metallic bonding?
the size of metal ions and the charge of metal ions
