Bonding And Structure Flashcards
What are giant structures
Crystal structures in which all the atoms or ions are linked by a network of strong bonding extending throughout the structure
What are simple molecular structures
Consist of groups of atoms held together by strong covalent bonding within the molecules but weak forces of attraction between the molecules
What are intermolecular forces
Weak attractive forces between molecules
What is a lattice
Regular three dimensional arrangement of atoms or ions in a crystal
What is ionic bonding
Strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions in a lattice
What is electrolysis
Decomposition of a compound by electricity
What is a covalent bond
Strong electrostatic attraction between two nuclei and the shared pair of electrons between them
What is a dative covalent bond
Bond in which two atoms share a pair of electrons, both of the electrons being donated by one atom
What is bond energy
Energy required to break one mole of the bonds in a substance in the gaseous state
What is bond angle
Angle between two covalent bonds in a molecule or giant covalent structure
What are isoelectronic molecules
Have same number and arrangement of electrons
What are polar covalent bonds
Bonds between atoms of different elements, the shared electrons are drawn towards the atom that is more electronegative causing a dipole at either end
What is electronegativity
Ability of an atom to attract the bonding electrons in a covalent bond
How does continuum of bonding types change in relation to electronegativity
Difference in electronegativity between bonded atoms gives indication of bonds eg larger difference means more polar bonds
What is a free radical
An atom that has at least one unpaired electron
