Bonding Flashcards
What is a ion
A charged particle formed when an atom loses or gains an electron.
What is a cation
A positive ion
What is a anion
A negative ion
Why does loss and gain of electrons occur
To obtain a full outer shell for a ion to become stable
What is a molecular ion
A charged particle containing two or more atoms covalently bonded.
What is an ionic bond
The attraction between two oppositely charged ions.
It occurs between a non metals and metals
The ……. charges of the two ions ……… each other very strongly and requires a lot of energy to break. This attraction is called an ……….. ………

Ionic bond
When does covalent bonding occur
It occurs between two non metals both needing to GAIN electrons to reach full outer shells. To manage this they have to SHARE electrons from their outer shells.
What is a covalent bond
A shared pair of electrons
What is a molecule
A group that contains two or more atoms covalently bonded
What does diatomic mean
Means there are two atoms covalently bonded in a molecule
Describe a metallic bonding structure
Metal atoms are packed tightly together in a regular lattice. The tight packing causes outer electrons to get separated from their atoms and results in a regular lattice of positive ions and a delocalised sea of electrons
What is metallic bonding
The attraction between delocalised electrons and positive ions in a regular lattice
