Atomic Structure Flashcards
How do atoms gain ions?
Whenever atoms gain or loose electrons they form ions
What are cations and how are they formed
Cations are positive ions and are formed when a atom looses electrons
What are anions and how are they formed
Anions are negative ions that are formed when a atom gains electrons
What did Dalton believe
All elements were made up of small particles called atoms
J J Thomson discovery
Plum pudding model
Stated negative electrons embedded in a positive sphere
Rutherford discovery
Model had negative electron orbiting a positive nucleus
What did Chadwick discover
The neutron
Present day facts
protons and neutrons in the nucleus and electrons orbit around in shells
What is the atomic number
This is the number of protons in an atom
What is the mass number
The total number of neutrons and protons in (the nucleus of an) atom
Is the mass number shown on top/bottom
Is the atomic number shown top/bottom
Mass number = top
Atomic number = bottom
What are isotopes
Isotopes are atoms which have the same amount of protons (so they are atoms of the same element) but the have different number of neutrons (which means they have a different mass number)
